Canada suspends visas for non-citizens coming from Ebola infected regions in West Africa
Canada announced in an October 31, 2014, press release that its Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander ordered the suspension of visas for non-citizens coming into Canada from West African nations that have a high infectious rate of the Ebola virus.
The decision will not affect Canadian citizens, residents of Canada, or foreign nationals who have a Canadian visa.
These individuals are allowed to fly back to Canada from a West African nation, but they will have to undergo the health screening process to ensure that they are not infected with the Ebola virus.
Based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of cases and deaths resulting from the Ebola virus has increased.
According to the CDC, the number of cases has increased to over 13, 500 while the number of deaths has increased to over 4,900. Most of the cases and deaths have occurred in the West African nations of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.
The WHO removed Nigeria from the list of West African nations with cases of the Ebola virus after Nigeria went 42 days without any new cases.
This year marks the first time that the Ebola virus spread beyond West Africa to the Western nations of Germany, Spain, and the United States.
The Ebola cases in the West have resulted from a person, who had the Ebola virus, travelling into the country. Germany, Spain, and the United States have had at least one death resulting from the Ebola virus. Canada has not had any cases of the Ebola virus.
